Stellaris fine second in Oaks

She might not have claimed the victor’s crown, but Stellaris wreathed herself in glory nonetheless when finishing second in the Grade I Del Mar Oaks at the weekend for Mike stidham.

Settled midpack for much of the race by jockey Kent Desormeaux, Stellaris came with a rattling run down the stretch to claim second spot by a neck, two-and-a-half lengths behind the winner. It was a fine performance by Stellaris in a field choc-full of talent, and she accrued owners Tom Van Meter and Mike Stidham a handsome $60,000 for her efforts.

Stellaris has now posted a trifecta of second place finishes in stake races, each tougher than the last implying that this lightly raced daughter of Harlan’s Holiday is still very much on the improve.

It looks like it’s going to be another busy week at Arlington for the Stidham stable, with Redhot Fillypepper, Betterthandiamonds and Bobblehead entered Thursday, and One Go All Go, Rockabye Barry and Scrumpdilicious entered Friday.

Check back in again later this week for a look ahead to the weekend action.
