Bobblehead by name, hard-headed by nature, Mike Stidham’s latest exciting young recruit cast off his maiden tag in convincing fashion yesterday – a win that sets the weekend up nicely for the stable.
A three-year-old son of Bob and John, Bobblehead flew from the gates and was never headed thereafter, stretching clear under jockey James Graham at the top of the stretch and showing grizzled determination at the wire to cling onto victory by a neck from a fast closing Wild About You.
On the evidence thus far, owners Three Kings Racing and Terry Hamilton look to have a young gelding with bags of potential on their hands. This was only his second racecourse appearance–he finished a fine second on his debut–and having demonstrated an aptitude for a good fight, the sky they say is the limit – you can almost hear the track announcer now: “Bobblehead by a nose.”
This weekend may lack the graded stake fireworks of recent weekends, but Stidham is still sending out plenty of runners. At Arlington today he saddles Scrumpdilicious, Rockabye Barry and One Go All Go, while tomorrow is the turn of South Beach Dancer at the Chicago track.
Partyinslowmotion goes to Canterbury Park tomorrow, while Star’s Woman is Stidham’s sole representative at Del Mar Sunday.
Check back in again next week for a round-up of the weekend action.
