The fine one-two Mike Stidham enjoyed at the end of last week with Premura and Liberty Bond epitomized the start that Stidham has enjoyed at this current Fair Grounds meet: an absolute hum-dinger!
That day, both fillies broke sharp-ish from the gate to take up the running, and they never left the one-two spots for the entirety of the race – Liberty Bond picking up the slack during the first half of the race, only for Premura under jockey James Graham to finish the better of the two. They both passed the winning post over eight lengths ahead of the next horse home.
Premura, owned by Austin Paul, was shrugging the monkey from her back on her very first run for Stidham, who said that she had been unlucky in her previous races. “She’s a well-bred filly who has trained beautifully since she’s come to me. And she ran just like she’s been training.”
Liberty Bond, owned by Team Valor, was, like Premura, having her first run for Stidham, and he couldn’t have been any more pleased with her performance.
“She’s another who’s beautifully bred,” he said. “She’s been knocking on the door in her previous races. And obviously, I’m delighted to be training for Team Valor.”
Today, Stidham is looking for a sweet result in the fourth at Hawthorne when he runs Cake Maker, while Friday back at Fair Grounds it’s the turn of Warriorscmoutoplay.
“I’m absolutely delighted with the way the meet’s started for me,” Stidham said. “The weather’s gorgeous, the turf course is in great shape. I just hope we can continue on in the same kind of form.”
