Dawn and Ike Thrash’s Ike Walker positively thrashed the opposition in yesterday’s $40,000 South Mississippi Owners and Breeders Stakes, notching a first bit of black type as he once again found his winning groove.
Under an ice cool James Graham, Ike Walker broke mid-pack and assumed the lead as they swung into the straight. Once there, Ike Walker dismissed the field as promptly as a school-teacher at recess, and they coasted home a four-and-three-quarter-length winner at the wire.
Ike Walker has always looked a horse with immense promise after he sprung onto the scene with a nice maiden win at Arlington last August, and with this confidence-boosting win under his belt, it’s now onwards and upwards as a three-year-old.
A special mention must go to Zubi Zubi Zu, who returned from a lay-off with a nice performance Thursday for owners Christine and Phil Hatfield – a run that will act as a fine pipe-opener. Zubi Zubi Zu should be everyone’s safe-word next time she reappears.
As for tomorrow, Stidham has three runners at Fair Grounds: Skirts on Fire, If I Ever, and Infinite Magic.
Check back in again next week for a recap of the weekend action.
