Jessica’s Star aims to turn the start of the Keeneland meet into a winning one for Mike Stidham, when last year’s Iowa Derby winner lines up in today’s Grade III Commonwealth Stakes.
Making his first start since last September, Jessica’s Star is one of seven scheduled to line up in the $300,000 race over seven furlongs. Mark Breen’s four-year-old son of Magna Graduate is an 8-1 shot on the Morning Line, and jockey James Graham will ride.
Stidham’s only other runner this weekend is Titfortat, who runs on the Commonwealth Stakes undercard in the eleventh race.
Worthy of an honorable mention is Ike Walker, who ran a fine race in defeat at Oaklawn Park earlier this week. Dawn and Ike Thrash’s son of Bellamy Road has already made a fine start to the year in winning the South Mississippi Owners and Breeders Stakes at Fair Grounds, and this latest tidy performance in a tough little contest proves his stake victory no fluke.
Don’t forget to check back in again next week for a round up of the weekend action.
