It’s the Grade III Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap at–wait for it–Prairie Meadows today, and Stidham’s Jessica’s Star is one of 11 lining up in the $100,000 race.
Jessica’s Star has been slowly coming to the boil this season, and his victory last time out in the Jim Rasmussen Memorial Stakes, also at Prairie Meadows, was a performance that showed he’s lost none of the talent that saw him claim the Grade III Ohio Derby last year.
But he’s not going to have things all his own way in the Cornhusker Handicap, run over one and one eighth miles. Brad Cox’s grizzled Carve is the 9-2 Morning Line favorite. Conversely, Jessica’s Star is a 10-1 shot. But, we do know that Stidham’s runner is in fine fettle at present, and he can enjoy the able services of jockey Alex Canchari in the saddle.
Elsewhere over the weekend, Colour Party is Stidham’s sole representative at Arlington today, while Skirts on Fire heads to Canterbury Park. Heart Stopper and Mighty Brown double up for the barn at Arlington tomorrow.
Yesterday, La Bruna Forte added another victory to her resume for this year when winning by a Secretariat-styled margin of 13-and-a-half lengths at Arlington yesterday, under jockey Mitchell Murrill. Empyrean Stable’s daughter of Big Brown is inching ever closer to pushing her career earnings over the $100,000 mark.
Don’t forget to check back in with us early next week.
