Double delight

After two more victories today, Mike Stidham extended his yawning lead at the top of the trainers’ standings at Fair Grounds.

First up was Conquest Tiz One, who was second in the Louisiana Champions Day Lassie Stakes last time out. This time she didn’t make any mistakes under jockey Jose Valdivia, leading from start to finish before recording a length-and-a-half victory for her owners, the Panic Stable.

Then, it was the turn of War Point, recording his first win since October 2014 on his first start for the Stidham stable. Another mount for Valdivia, War Front produced the goods in opposite fashion to Conquest Tiz One, coming from behind to steal the race by a neck. With this nice confidence booster under his belt, War Point looks nailed on to follow up again some time soon.

After the stable’s heroics today, Stidham currently sits in pole position on the trainers’ standings. He’s bagged $548,220 in prize money earned, with 17 wins from 63 runners for an exception 27% win strike rate.

In other news, stable stalwart Ground Transport made his first start of the year at Aqueduct on Friday, finishing a good second. This was an improved effort by Ground Transport, and West Point Thoroughbreds, St. Elias Stable and Get Grounded Stable’s six year old son of Big Brown is slowly returning to the sort of form that saw him placed in graded-stake company.

I’ll be back later this week with an update from the stable, and a look ahead to the week’s runners.
