After the July 4 fireworks of earlier in the week, when Zipessa landed the Grade III $200,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes at Parx Racing, the Stidham stable is plotting more dazzling displays, with runners in two of the weekend’s biggest races.
First up, Marypop and Secret Someone line up in the Grade III Modesty Handicap at Arlington today – a $125,000 race for fillies and mares over one and three sixteenth miles. Marypop is a fascinating entry. This ex-French filly won a Grade III in Chantilly on her last start in her home country, and is a 3-1 shot on the Morning Line for owner Richard L. Duchossois. Word from the stable is that she’s flying. Jockey Carlos Marquez, Jr. takes the mount.
Secret Someone is also in rare form at present, as evinced by a victory in the Lady Canterbury Stakes last time out. Owned by Mt. Brilliant Farm, Secret Someone is a 12-1 shot, and jockey Robby Albarado takes the ride. In all, there’s seven runners in the race.
Later in the day, Tequila Joe lines up in the Grade III American Derby – a $125,000 race over one mile and one eighth. Tequila Joe, a relatively lightly raced three-year-old colt by Stormy Atlantic, is fancied at 9/2 to win his first stake race for owners Jerry and Ronald Frankel. It’s a tough assignment – 11 line up in the race. Again, Jockey Carlos Marquez, Jr. takes the mount.
The Stidham barn heads into the weekend on a high, after Miss Swift Kitty won her second race (in a four race career, thus far), with an authoritative display at Arlington yesterday under jockey Florent Geroux, for owner Ronald Gasaway.
