Mike Stidham isn’t known for doing things by half measures, and so it proves tomorrow, when he sends out not one, not two, but three shots at the Grade I Beverly D Stakes at Arlington.
Stidham’s three flying fillies in tomorrow’s big race (which is worth a cool $700,000) are Marypop, Secret Someone, and Zipessa. The last named of the trio is the shortest price of the three on the early Morning Line. Zipessa, ridden by Joe Bravo, is in flying form at present, and won the Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes last time out at Parx Racing.
Marypop, ridden by fellow Frenchy Flavien Prat, is a 30-1 shot on the Morning Line, and was fifth last time out in the Grade III Modesty Handicap (her US debut). Prior to that, she had won the Grade III Prix Allez France back in France, so she clearly possesses an engine.
Last but not least is Secret Someone, ridden by Robbie Albarado, who’s another 30-1 shot on the Morning Line. In rare heart both starts this year, Secret Someone claimed the Lady Canterbury Stakes in June, and she’s earned her berth in this much tougher contest.
The Stidham stable has enjoyed a good run of things this week. Storming the Beach won at Arlington yesterday for owners Hill ‘N Dale Farm, while Gridiron Cat, a two-year-old gelding by Discreet Cat, won at Arlington on his third ever start for a syndicate of owners including Mike Pegram, Feel The Thunder Stable, J. Quenneville and M. Tice. Both horses were ridden by Mitchell Murrill.
