New Trier, a two-year-old filly by Holy Roman Emperor who was running in the UK at the beginning of the season, broke her maiden in fine style on her first Stateside start, for owners Old Sangreal Racing.
Given a confident ride by Mitchell Murrill, New Trier pressed the pace all the way before forging clear down the stretch to pass the post nearly four lengths ahead of the next horse home. One thing’s for certain, there’s more to come from this quick youngster.
Now for the weekend, which looks like it could be a cracker, what with four Stidham runners lining up in three well endowed stake races at Kentucky Downs.
First up, Secret Someone is one of nine expected to go to post in the $350,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes. Winner of the Lady Canterbury Stakes a few starts ago, Secret Someone is a 4-1 shot on the Morning Line, and Robbie Albarado takes the mount.
Then it’s the turn of recent Godolphin debut scorer, Zunino, who lines up against 11 other runners in the $350,000 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes. This two-year-old Elusive Quality colt couldn’t have been more impressive at Arlington last month, and he’s a 15-1 shot under Brian Hernandez in what looks a hot contest.
Stidham then points two arrows at the $350,000 Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies Stakes – Maluku and Forest Circle. Twelve runners go to post.
Forest Circle, ridden by Robbie Albarado, won on her racecourse bow, before taking a shot at the Dear Stakes last time out. Godolphin’s Maluku, who won at the second time of asking, enjoys the services of Carlos Marquez in the saddle.
