A Derby win and Fair Grounds’ start proper…

Godolphin’s Cedartown made a tremendous stakes race debut yesterday when running out a clear winner of the $200,000 Zia Park Derby at Zia Park under Ry Eikleberry.

The three-year-old son of Candy Ride sat on the heels of the leaders early on, only to kick on down the stretch, dinging it out with the eventual third horse home before surging clear in the final furlong.

Cedartown has been brought along with Stidham’s customary patience this year, and the trainer was understandably delighted that the hard work has paid off.

“This was a fantastic result,” said Stidham. “We’ve always known he’s a very talented horse. It’s obviously very nice to get the job done for the owners, Godolphin. And I’m delighted for all the staff, who’ve worked so hard behind the scenes.”
