Mike Stidham enjoyed a weekend to remember at Fair Grounds after his seven runners picked up two wins and three seconds.
First to strike was Pica, who easily landed a claimer on Friday to take her overall score-card to two wins from only four starts. Always forcing the pace, James Graham kicked for home aboard Pica at the top of the stretch before passing the wire a breathtaking 7 1/2 lengths clear of the second horse. This three-year-old filly by Consolidator is clearly in rude health at present, and looks nailed-on to consolidate her record at Fair Ground’s current winter meet.
Stidham had to wait less than 24 hours for his second win this weekend: Ronson in Saturday’s claimer. Like Pica, Ronson was always up with the pace. Unlike Pica, however, he was asked to knuckle down in the straight to fend off the persistent challenge of eventual runner-up, Bigin. But knuckle-down he did, and he passed the wire 1 1/4 lengths to the good, James Graham again on board. This was Ronson’s third win in seven starts, and like Pica, Ronson looks guaranteed to improve his record at the meet.
Stidham’s triumvirate of winners comprised Local One Thirty, Curlins Queen and Ground Transport, with the last named especially admirable in defeat.
Check back in again later this week for all news of the weekend runners.
