On another good weekend for the Mike Stidham stable, I Dazzle proved to be the headline act when she made a winning debut for the stable at Fair Grounds on Saturday.
A little awkward out of the gates, I Dazzle went wide on both turns, but showed guts and tenacity aplenty to battle down the stretch, prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths at the wire. This six-year-old mare by Hold That Tiger has been highly tried down the years, and was Grade II placed in the Marjorie L. Everett Handicap at Hollywood Park last year. Clearly still in possession of a considerable amount of ability, and taking into consideration Stidham’s fine record with older fillies, I Dazzle looks to have another good year ahead of her.
While she may have lost out on victory in the Jersey Lilly Stakes at Sam Houston on Saturday by the slimmest of margins, Every Way showered herself in glory with a performance that also bodes well for the year ahead. Always nicely placed behind the heels of the leaders, Every Way was brought to challenge down the stretch, only to be pipped at the wire by the fast-finishing Always Kitten, who’s tail appeared to be on fire. Every Way has been a real stalwart for the Stidham down the years, but this performance shows that she’s still in great heart, and it looks to be only a matter of time before she claims her maiden stakes victory.
Looking to the week ahead, Stidham has made entries for Rock on This and Brown Almighty tomorrow at Fair Grounds, while on Thursday, he’s made entries for Jessica’s Star and In Tall Cotton. On Friday, it’s the turn of Love Blind, while over at Sam Houston Jenny June bids to go one better than last time.
Check back in later this week for a look ahead to the weekend.
