On a relatively quiet weekend for Mike Stidham, he still enjoyed a nice winner when Sanculpa showed himself to be a horse with a bright future when charging to victory on only his second racecourse appearance.
Jockey James Graham positioned Sanculpa three-wide early on the heels of the leaders before producing him with a rally around the turn. At the top of the stretch, he drew into contention alongside the long-time leader, Turf Kitten. Both lost a little momentum as a result of mid-stretch scrimmaging, only for Stidham’s runner to recover his equilibrium sooner, knuckling down to a hard fought head victory.
Sanculpa, a three-year-old gelding by Langfuhr, stepped up nicely on his debut effort, where he finished fourth. With this experience under his belt, it wouldn’t be too great a stretch to imagine him stepping up again when Stidham next sends him into battle.
Looking ahead, Stidham has made entries for Brown Almighty on Wednesday, Aragorn’s Queen Thursday and Follow the Kitten Friday.
Check back in again later this week for news of the weekend runners.
