On her first start for the Stidham stable, Sweetbaby proved a tasty little treat at Arlington yesterday, breaking her maiden for legendary owner Virginia Kraft Payson.
This three-year-old filly by Candy Ride had shown little in four starts earlier this year, but under a confident ride by Mitchell Murrill, Sweetbaby looked a different proposition altogether, clinching the race by a relatively easy length-and-a-quarter. The victory might not have matched the prestige of some other races Virginia Kraft Payson has won during her long and wonderful career as an owner, but it still would have proven satisfying.
What’s more, the win bodes well for a weekend chock-full of stake race action for the Stidham barn.
At Kentucky Downs tomorrow, Rapid Rhythm is one of 10 to line up in the well-endowed $350,000 Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint Stakes. Looking for her first win in stake company, Rapid Rhythm enjoys the services of Julien Leparoux in the saddle, and is a 10-1 shot on the Morning Line.
Over at Arlington, Diadura and R Naja team up for team Stidham in the $75,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes. Twelve are expected to go to post, and Diadura (one win, one run) has Carlos Marquez in the saddle, while R Naja (one run, one second) will be ridden by Mitchell Murrill.
One race later, Birdsnest Party looks to break his maiden in auspicious fashion in the Grade III Arlington-Washington Futurity, worth a cool $100,000. A two-year-old colt by Twirling Candy, Birdsnest Party (one run, one fourth) will be ridden by Sebastian Saez, and is a 15-1 shot on the Morning Line.
