Sweet Summer Success!
Legendary owner Virginia Kraft Payson enjoyed a nice win at Hawthorne yesterday, when Summer Sweet cruised to a fine victory in the hands of jockey Carlos Marquez.
This honest More Than Ready filly was more than overdue a first win, and boy, she did it in style yesterday, breaking well before charging clear down the stretch. And this victory will stand her in good stead when she eventually makes her way to the breeding shed.
And now for the weekend, where the headline act for the Stidham stable is Saguaro Row, who’s one of 10 fillies to line up in the $80,000 Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs on Sunday.
This once-raced, once victorious two-year-old Union Rags filly is taking a step up in class, but she couldn’t have won her maiden in any finer fashion, and she’s a 5-1 shot on the Morning Line to prevail in the mile contest under jockey Corey Lanerie.
