Derby by Proxy!

It’s Ohio Derby weekend at Thistledown, and the Stidham stable is pointing former Kentucky Derby hope Proxy at the $500,000 contest.

Before we take a look at his chances, we’ve another nice victory to celebrate this week with Speedway Stables and Stone Farm’s Common Bond breaking his duck at Delaware Park on Wednesday in pretty remarkable fashion.

This 3-year-old son of The Factor was ridden positively from the minute the gates opened, and after taking the lead along the backstretch, Common Bond pulled away from the rest of the field to win by more than 12 lengths under Mychel Sanchez.

With only three runs under his belt, there’s every reason to think that Common Bond still has plenty of improvement in him.

And now, onto the G3 Ohio Derby tomorrow, with Proxy drawn 9 of 11 in the 1 and 1/8th mile race. Proxy, a 3-year-old son of Tapit, performed creditably in a series of Derby trials this spring, including second place finishes in the G2 Risen Star Stakes and G3 Lecomte Stakes. Joe Bravo takes the mount on the Morning Line 5-1 shot.

Here’s the rest of the weekend entries:
