It was a fantastic weekend for the stable courtesy of CJ Thoroughbreds and Mo Speed Racing's Tom's Magic, who showed class and tenacity alike to romp away with the Black Gold Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Given a lovely ride by Jeiron Barbosa, Tom's Magic really picked up in the home stretch, gaining the lead within the final furlong through a ground-saving rail run before pulling away to win by two lengths.
This thrice-raced three-year-old son of Justify only made his debut in November, but boy, his improvement has been rapid indeed, in the process showing that his $200,000 yearling price-tag could well prove a steal.
Despite running a little green in spots, he won really readily in the end, hinting at bigger things in his future. In the near-term, this Ontario-bred could well be headed to Woodbine this summer, to capitalise on the Canadian track's rich stakes program. Indeed, the 166th running of the prestigious King's Plate has already been mooted as a possible target...
